Skill levels Age Two & Three: Tiny Tots Our Tiny Tots program is for 2 and 3 year olds. The ratio is 1 to 1 and works on floating, water acclamation, and beginning swimming skills. No parent is required in the water for this program. |
Age Four: Four-year-old class In our group lessons, we offer a specific class for the four-year-old age group. We feel that this age group needs a lower student to teacher ratio and is not always ready to join the novice program. This is why we have created a program especially for them. |
Age 5 & Up: Novice The novice program is for any swimmer 5 years of age or older. We divide the students into classes: tadpoles, dolphins 1, dolphins 2, and sharks, based upon the first day screening. If your child is 5 years and older, this is the program for them. If students have been enrolled in classes at Council Rock before, please bring your report card from the previous session. Tadpoles: The primary skills in the Tadpoles class include breath control, floating, kicking, and jumping into the pool. Skills Test: Jump into the water, surface on your back, and kick to the wall unassisted to move onto the Dolphins 1 class. Dolphins 1: The primary skill in the Dolphins 1 class is Front Crawl (Freestyle) arm stroke and kick. Other skills such as treading water are included in this level. Skills Test: Students must swim Front Crawl with correct armstroke ½ way across the width, then fin/ scull the remainder of the distance unassisted to move onto the Dolphins 2 class. Dolphins 2: The primary skill in the Dolphins 2 class is the mastery of the Front Crawl (Freestyle) arms, kick, and breathing. Students will also begin to learn backstroke armstroke, and continue to develop more endurance with treading water and other survival skills. Skills Test: Students must swim Front Crawl with correct breathing and armstroke across the width of the pool. They also must show they have enough endurance to be able to swim in the sharks level. Sharks: The primary skills in the Sharks class include building endurance of front crawl and backstroke for swimming the length of the pool (25 yards), and beginning diving. Skills Test: Students must dive into the pool and swim Front Crawl with correct breathing and armstroke the length of the pool (25 yards). |
Advanced Program The advanced program is for swimmers that have mastered the freestyle armstroke and breathing. Specifically, they should not lift their head when they breathe when swimming freestyle and they should also have enough endurance to complete multiple lengths of the swimming pool (25 yards). |
FAQ Children’s Swimming Lessons Program
Q: Can I register my children prior to the start of registration?
A: No. We have limited spaces in our program. This is due to safety, proper instruction, and staffing. The registration times allow for fair sign-up by all community members.
Q: Can my child use a life vest or water wings during the swim lesson class?
A: No. A floatation device will hinder the child’s ability to learn basic swimming skills.
Q: What is the student to instructor ratio?
A: Typically, 3 students for 1 instructor at tadpoles & dolphins 1. 5 students for 1 instructor at dolphins 2, sharks, and advanced.
Q: What is the background of the children's swim lesson instructors?
A: They are high school and college students and adults that have a background in swimming (mostly from the varsity swim teams at CR-North and CR-South). They have completed three background checks and have completed our in-service training. Our lifeguards have lifeguarding and CPR certification.
Q: How do the sessions run during our swim lessons program?
A: The weekday swim lessons are one-week intensive swim lesson sessions. The class will meet Monday to Thursday (four days) during your selected time slot. During the fall and spring if you sign up for the Saturday session, they run for four consecutive weeks.
Q: What type of training do they receive to teach the swim lessons?
A: We do in-service training prior to the beginning of swimming lessons.
Q: Does Council Rock offer private swim lessons?
A: We offer both group and private swim lessons.
Q: Can I watch my child during the swim lessons?
A: Yes, parents are permitted to watch swimming lessons from the pool balcony.
Q: My child is not potty trained. Can they go into the swimming pool?
A: All children that are not potty trained must wear rubber pants over their diapers when going swimming. For everyone safety, no one should swim that is having digestive issues.
